Irland ist eine Insel, die eine reiche Kultur aufweist. Traditionelle irische Musik ist weltweit bekannt und \u00fcberall zu h\u00f6ren. Die weiten gr\u00fcnen Felder Irlands f\u00fcllen die Tr\u00e4ume vieler junger Menschen. Der St. Patrick&#8217;s Day wird auf der ganzen Welt gefeiert, und in fast jeder gr\u00f6\u00dferen Stadt findet man einen Irish Pub. Die irische Kultur hat demnach einen gro\u00dfen Einfluss auf die Popkultur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aber wir wollen tiefer blicken und sehen, dass Irland auch eine Geschichte des Imperialismus, des Terrors und des Kampfes um die Unabh\u00e4ngigkeit hat, die die Insel bis heute spaltet. Wir wollen uns mit der modernen irischen Literatur befassen, sowie den Auswirkungen postkolonialer Strukturen auf diese, aber auch mit der Darstellung Irlands in den Medien und den damit verbundenen Stereotypen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Diese und weitere Themen werden wir in den Vortr\u00e4gen dieses Sommersemesters diskutieren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Hinweis: Die Veranstaltungen finden alle auf Englisch statt.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Die Darstellung von Irland in den Medien: Von Aimee Waha, am Mittwoch, 08.05.2024, 19 Uhr via Zoom<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aimee Waha ist Dozentin am Irish Studies Institute der Universit\u00e4t W\u00fcrzburg. Sie besch\u00e4ftigt sich mit Identit\u00e4t und kulturellen Repr\u00e4sentationen, vor allem in Literatur und Film, wobei sie sich auch auf Race und Gender sowie auf transnationale und transkulturelle Ph\u00e4nomene fokussiert. In ihrem Vortrag m\u00f6chte sie die Darstellung Irlands in den Medien diskutieren. Da der Vortrag \u00fcber Zoom abgehalten wird, kann dieser entweder im Schmittmann-Kolleg oder digital verfolgt werden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Schmittiefahrt: 30.5.-03.06.2024<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Die Schmittie-Reise geht in diesem Sommer nach Schleswig-Holstein. Auf einem Bio-Bauernhof werden wir uns mit Permakultur besch\u00e4ftigen und erfahren, wie nachhaltige Landwirtschaft aussehen kann. Au\u00dferdem werden wir einige selbst, erarbeitete Vortr\u00e4ge und Workshops \u00fcber Irland halten, um unser Wissen \u00fcber<br>die &#8222;Emerald Island&#8220; zu erweitern. Da der Hof ein Selbstversorger-Ferienhaus ist, werden wir uns selbst bekochen und unsere Mahlzeiten gemeinsam einnehmen, um als Hausgemeinschaft und Schmitties noch enger zusammenzuwachsen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Terror und politische Gewalt in Irland seit 1798:  Von Dr. Dieter Reinisch, am Mittwoch, 05.06.2024, 19 Uhr<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Terror und politische Gewalt sind bis heute Teil des allt\u00e4glichen Lebens in Irland. Doch woher kommt diese politische Instabilit\u00e4t und wie hat sich diese in den vergangenen Jahrhunderten entwickelt? Dies wird uns Dr. Dieter Reinisch, au\u00dferordentlicher Professor f\u00fcr Internationale Beziehungen an der Webster University und unabh\u00e4ngiger Journalist, der in Wien und Belfast lebt, n\u00e4herbringen. Derzeit arbeitet er an der University of Galway und forscht \u00fcber die Radikalisierung sozialer Bewegungen und politische Gewalt in Deutschland und Irland seit dem Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Der Weg von der Feder zur Ver\u00f6ffentlichung: Als (weibliche) Schriftstellerin in der irischen Kreativszene: Von Dil\u00e2ra Yilmaz am Dienstag, 02.07.2024, 19 Uhr<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Was bedeutet es, im heutigen Irland Schriftstellerin zu sein? Spielt das Geschlecht dabei eine Rolle? Diese und weitere Fragen k\u00f6nnen Sie Dil\u00e2ra Yilmaz stellen, einer Doktorandin an der Universit\u00e4t Kiel mit den Schwerpunkten irische Literatur und Gender Studies. Derzeit untersucht sie das Thema &#8222;Conditions of Contemporary Irish Women\u2019s Fiction Writing&#8220;. In ihrem Vortrag wird sie uns einen Einblick in die moderne irische Literatur geben.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Text on the flyer in English:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our topic in the summer term of 2024 is Ireland. An island that has a rich and long lasting culture. Traditional Irish Music is listened to and known everywhere. Ireland&#8217;s vast green fields are filling the dreams of many young people. St. Patrick&#8217;s Day is celebrated all over the world, and in almost every greater city, one can find an Irish Pub. Thus, Irish Culture has a great impact on popular culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But we want to look deeper and see that Ireland also has a history of imperialism, terror, and the fight for independence, which have divided the Island until today. We also aim to look into modern Irish Literature, the impact of postcolonial structures on it, but also how Ireland is depicted in the media, and the stereotypes that come along with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These and even more topics are what we want to discuss in the lectures this summer term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Representation of Ireland in the Media: By Aimee Waha. Wed, 08.05.2024, 19 o\u2019clock via Zoom.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aimee Waha is a lecturer at the University of W\u00fcrzburg\u2019s Institute for Irish Studies. She focuses on identity and its cultural representations, predominantly in literature and film, while also focusing on race and gender as well as transnational and transcultural phenomena. In her lecture, she wants to discuss the depiction of Ireland in the media. This lecture will be held via Zoom, so you can either join in the Schmittie or digitally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Schmittie-Trip: 30.05. &#8211; 03.06.2024.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This summer&#8217;s Schmittie Trip goes to Schleswig-Holstein. On an organic farm, we will investigate permaculture and what sustainable farming could look like. Furthermore, we will also have some self-prepared presentations and workshops regarding Ireland to broaden our knowledge of the Emerald Island. Since the farm is a self-supporting holiday house, we will cook our food ourselves and take our meals together, coming even closer as a house community and Schmitties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Terror and Political Violence in Ireland since 1798. But how did it emerge and develop over the past centuries? This will be brought to us by Dr. Dieter Reinisch, adjunct professor in International Relations at Webster University and independent journalist, who lives in Vienna and Belfast. He currently works at the University of Galway, researching social movement radicalisation and political violence in Germany and Ireland since the end of World War I.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Irish pen-to-publication pipeline: Being a (female) writer in Ireland&#8217;s creative economy. By Dil\u00e2ra Yilmaz, Tue, 02.07.2024, 19 o\u2019clock. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is it like to be a writer in contemporary Ireland? Does gender play a role in the equation? These and other questions you might want to address to Dil\u00e2ra Yilmaz, a PhD student at the University of Kiel, focusing on Irish literature and gender studies. Currently, she is investigating the topic \u201cConditions of Contemporary Irish Women\u2019s Fiction Writing\u201d.
